Another cinema in Haltern? – Citizens should not delude themselves

In 2003 the last cinema in Haltern closed its doors. But again and again the desire for a cinema in Seestadt is expressed. Still, no one would probably go.

The desire of the new residents is great: a cinema in Haltern am See. But not only the newcomers to Seestadt have this wish. He’s been mentioned again and again for a number of years. More precisely: Since 2003 the last cinema in Haltern, the film flap, has closed its doors forever.

I doubt that all the citizens who call so loudly for a cinema for Haltern would also go regularly to keep the hall afloat. We’re too spoiled by the speed of television and the convenience of streaming providers.

With a cinema as small as the clapperboard recently, the people in Haltern would have to reckon with the fact that the latest Spiderman or James Bond blockbuster will not be shown on the screen. Smaller film productions that come from other European countries instead of Hollywood are more realistic. But also special.

In contrast to streaming providers or television, such a film would not run immediately after it was released in cinemas, but only weeks later. Of course it will also be more expensive than the film flat rate from Netflix and Co.

So if, purely hypothetically, someone were to spend (a lot of) money to bring a cinema hall back to life – which would be a death-defying step during the corona pandemic: turning all holders into cinema-goers will be impossible. We’re too spoiled.
