The Josef Albers Gallery has one more award. Klaus Müller accepted the BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024 yesterday evening (5.9) in Düsseldorf. “This means that we are now officially one of the ten most beautiful buildings in NRW. That is a great recognition,” says Bottrop’s technical councilor. “Here we were once again able to combine culture and building culture. “We have already succeeded in doing this with the cultural church and the extension of the August Everding cultural center.”
He passed the square, silver plaque directly to Dr. Linda Walther, director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat. “The extension has given the Museumszentrum Quadrat eight extremely high-quality exhibition rooms,” she emphasizes. “They give us the opportunity to implement large international projects, such as the first solo museum exhibition in Germany by the American artist Sheila Hicks, which we are opening on October 12th. We have also added two wonderful work rooms for education and communication, so that we can offer a rich program of workshops and guided tours that are very popular with our visitors. Annette Gigon’s extension is therefore not only of outstanding aesthetic quality, but it also opens up completely new possibilities for us in museum work.”
Ina Scharrenbach, Minister for Local Government, Home Affairs and Construction, was also impressed by the multiple awards. “I am delighted that I can once again present the award to the city of Bottrop.”
The building, based on a design by Gigon/Guyer, has already won an award for the third time. After the Arc Award 2023 and the BDA Architecture Prize Vest Recklinghausen Gelsenkirchen 2023, the Josef Albers Gallery has now also received the BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024. The jury justified its decision as follows: “The building by Gigon/Guyer responds subtly in terms of volume to the city garden and the two extensions by Küppers and, upon longer examination of the architecture, reveals a depth that the jury unanimously honors with a prize.”
In total, ten equally ranked prizes went to a remarkable selection of different projects at the BDA Architecture Prize NRW 2024. Another award winner is the Emschergenossenschaft pumping station in Oberhausen.
The extension of the Küppersmühle Museum in Duisburg and the replacement construction of an airship hangar WDL in Mülheim have been awarded the Gold Architecture Prize.
