At least 800 more have been evacuated from the active volcano in the Spanish island of Palma in the Canary Islands. Until now, six thousand people have had to leave their homes for security reasons.
The island’s emergency committee ordered people from the endangered area to gather in the evening at the designated location with personal belongings and pets.
These residents’ homes are threatened by new lava flows, which have already caused fires in several companies, including the cement factory.
If the situation returns to normal, people will be able to return to their homes with the security services to pick up other belongings.
CONTEXT:
Palmas volcanic eruption began September 19, after a 50-year period of peace. Hot lava has already destroyed more than 1,100 buildings and covered an area of 600 hectares.
