Booischot, Mechelen

Animal welfare, together with the Mechelse Dierenbescherming, seized another 41 cani corsi from the breeder in Booischot. Three weeks ago, 68 of these dogs were taken from the man because their condition there was dramatic. “Meanwhile, fifteen reception centers in Flanders have provided assistance. The pregnant cane corso that we had taken care of also gave birth to puppies,” says Wendy Kerselaers, manager of the Mechelen Animal Protection.

On May 25, the Mechelen Animal Protection took 68 cani corsi away from the breeder from Booischot in one fell swoop. The dogs of the Italian breed were with the man who could no longer take care of them or feed them. The four-legged friends also needed medical care and guidance. A crowdfunding was successfully started to complete the financial picture.

Fifteen shelters

However, the story doesn’t end yet. “Together with the police, a week after the first eviction, we went back to review the situation. We also took a dog with us that had an open, unkempt wound. Yesterday we went to collect another 41 dogs in Booischot together with Dierenwelzijn. A total of 15 shelters in Flanders have already come to our aid to take care of all the animals. We are pleased that we are not alone,” says the manager.

Adjusting legislation

The Animal Protection Mechelen asks for an amendment to the animal protection law. “It should be mandatory that dogs undergo proper socialization and that includes walking on a leash. Many of the problems we see in shelters are often caused by poor socialization. It is just as important as food and drink and a roof over the head for the animals. These dogs have a weight of 40 to 50 kilograms, it’s no laughing matter to carry them,” Wendy Kerselaers adds.

Puppies born

At the Dierenbescherming they still do not understand how this dog drama at the breeder in Booischot could get so out of hand. It is not realistic that a man only suddenly has to take care of 120 cani corsi. How in God’s name could this have happened unnoticed, they wonder at the Mechelen Animal Protection.

It’s not the end of the story yet. “Meanwhile, the pregnant cane corso that we are taking in has also given birth to a few puppies. And there are a few more bitches who may be pregnant. Finding good adopters becomes a challenge. The cane corso breed is not the easiest to catch. But if you are interested, you can register via the questionnaire on our website website”, Kerselaers decides.
