Chicago prosecutors are seeking an additional 25 years in prison for singer R. Kelly for six felonies, including producing child pornography and enticing minors to have sex. A jury has already found him guilty.

Robert Sylvester Kelly (55) has been accused of (child) abuse since the 1990s and has been in prison since 2019. Last year he was already convicted in New York for leading an organization that aimed to abuse women and underage girls.

He was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a federal judge in New York. A new punishment will come on top of that. A judge in Chicago will determine the sentence next Thursday.

Big hits

In the new case, Kelly’s behavior is called “sadistic”. Prosecutors also describe him as “a sexual predator” without remorse, who “poses a serious danger to society,” writes the AP news agency.

Kelly is not eligible for parole under New York’s first sentence until he has served 25 years.

Kelly scored big hits in the 90s like I believe I can fly. He sold millions of albums, even after rumors of abuse began to circulate.

Surviving R. Kelly

While the 2008 Grammy Award winner was already on trial, it wasn’t until after the airing of the 2019 documentary series, Surviving R. Kelly – with testimonies from his victims – that the criminal investigation against him was gaining momentum.
