Another 17 deaths from COVID-19 bring the total number of victims in Puerto Rico to 3,854

The Health Department reported today, Sunday, 17 additional deaths from COVID-19, thus bringing the total in this line to 3,854 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

“The COVID-19 vaccine is the best line of defense, it teaches the body to defend itself against the disease. People of any age are more likely to get seriously ill,” the agency wrote in a tweet.

Of the deceased, 11 were not vaccinated against the virus, another four were vaccinated with only two doses and another two had the booster dose.

The number of deaths reported does not mean that they all occurred in the past 24 hours. Until yesterday, Saturday, 518 deaths had been reported in the month of January.

Secretary of Health, Carlos Mellado, has clarified on several occasions that the number of deaths is higher in people vaccinated with two doses than in those not vaccinated because the majority of the population is inoculated, so “proportionally, the number will be higher.”

On the other hand, the agency detailed in its preliminary report that 531 people are hospitalized for coronavirus, which is 17 fewer patients than yesterday.

The figure is divided into 506 adult and 25 pediatric cases. Among the adults, 83 are connected to a ventilator.

According to data updated at 7:00 am, the preliminary positivity rate is 21.05%, which means that 21 out of 100 tests are positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Health will update at noon other statistics related to the demographics of the deceased, the total number of people vaccinated, those hospitalized in intensive care and the number of people with the booster dose.
