Annular Solar Eclipse 2023: When, Where, and How to Witness this Astronomical Event

In a short time, many people will be able to witness a unique astronomical event that does not occur regularly and is not to be missed by astronomy lovers or enthusiasts, so if you are interested in knowing what it is about, when it will occur, where and how to view it, we invite you to continue reading this article, where we will tell you all the details below.

What is this astronomical event about?

The astronomical event that is about to take place is an annular solar eclipse, in which a ring of fire can be seen in the sky. As our readers will surely know, a solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up in the same plane with the latter between the other two celestial bodies.

In this way, because the moon is between the earth and the sun, it blocks sunlight, which results in shadows being projected onto some parts of the earth’s surface, causing the sky to darken during the day. On the other hand, an annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the same position at its furthest point from the earth, causing the moon’s disk to be smaller than the sun and so it cannot be completely covered.

Consequently, during astronomical events, a dark disk (the Moon) appears surrounded by a larger, brighter ring (the part of the Sun that the Moon cannot hide), commonly known as the “ring of fire”.

When and where will it happen?

An annular solar eclipse will occur on October 14 this year and can be observed from several countries in North America, through Central America and South America. In particular, the shadow path will cover the United States, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Brazil and of course Mexico, so that some of these areas will be able to witness this amazing astronomical phenomenon in all its glory.

Specifically in Mexico, it will be visible north and east of Campeche, west of Yucatan and south of Quintana Roo. But if you have never been to these places or you don’t have the opportunity to go there, you should know that in all other Republican states you will be able to see a partial solar eclipse, which should also be admired.

How to see an annular solar eclipse?

To see an annular solar eclipse you have to pay very close attention to the start, maximum and end times, for example in Chetumal, the area where you can see the ring of fire, the times are said to be as follows:

Beginning of partial eclipse: October 14, 10:51:01 Beginning of total eclipse: October 14, 12:29:49 Peak eclipse: October 14, 12:31:59 Total eclipse complete: October 14, 12:34:10 Partial eclipse complete: October 14, 14:17:14

On the other hand, keep in mind that during a solar eclipse you cannot see the phenomenon directly with your eyes, but you need to use special eclipse glasses, which will protect your eyes and allow you to view the event safely.
