Annual Report Reveals Alarming Smoking-Related Deaths in Israel

JERUSALEM, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) — On Tuesday (Sept. 12), the annual report from Israel’s Ministry of Health came out. It reveals that smoking is responsible for approximately 8,000 deaths in Israel every year.

A report submitted to the Israeli parliament outlines the country’s smoking situation in 2022, with the aim of making the topic a public concern. and emphasizes the need to combat smoking and the severe damage that results from it.

The above report reveals that 10 percent of those annual deaths are non-smokers exposed to cigarette smoke from other people. It said that about one in five Israeli adults smokes. Meanwhile, 64.5 percent of non-smoking adults had been exposed to cigarette smoke from their environment in the past year.

Additionally, the number of students in grades 5 through 4 who smoke at least one cigarette per day increased to 9 percent in 2022, compared with 4.8 percent in 2019 and 6 percent in 2021.
