Thousands of redheads gathered in the Netherlands earlier this week to celebrate the annual Red Head Days festival in the southern city of Tilburg.

Scotsman Liam Hunter, 30, told Reuters that attending the three-day festival made him feel more self-confident. He added that he was bullied because of his strange hair color, like many red-haired people.
“I no longer feel lonely, I feel that I belong to a group and that I am part of something. Being here, I feel like a complete person,” he added.

According to the organizers, about five thousand red-haired people from different countries visited the festival. The festival included workshops in drawing, tips for applying cosmetics and skin care, as well as photo sessions, musical events and quick meetings between visitors.

The percentage of people with red hair is between one and two percent of the world’s population. Their percentage rises to between two and six percent among those whose origins are from northern Europe or northwest of the continent.
The Dutch festival began by accident after organizer and amateur painter Bart Rovenhorst published an advertisement in a local newspaper in 2005 asking for 15 red-haired models to paint. 150 models applied.

And Ruffenhorst, whose hair is not red, decided to take a group photo with everyone who communicated with him. This gathering was so successful and received such wide attention that the organizers decided to turn it into an annual event.

In 2013, the festival entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gathering of people with natural red hair, and there were 1,672 of them in the group photo at the time.
