Annual “Advancing Breast Cancer” Walk Raises Funds and Awareness in NYC Parks

Cancer survivors, family members, doctors and friends participated this Sunday in city parks for the annual walk “Advancing Breast Cancer.”

Hundreds of attendees gathered wearing pink in Central Park, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens and Midland Beach on Staten Island.

The goal is to raise money for research, progress in treatments and inform New Yorkers about basic facts about breast cancer.

“When I was in the process I always wanted to be in a place like this with more people who you know support you and who are with you, and today I feel good, happy to be here in this place. With the support of family, with the love of God, with the fight that one puts in oneself one gets ahead,” said Marissa Gálves, breast cancer survivor.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 18,000 women statewide will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the end of the year.

Besides skin cancer, this remains the most common cancer diagnosis among women in the United States.
