Coinciding with the anniversary of the derailment of the Alvia in Santiago, exactly ten years ago, dozens of relatives and victims gathered in the streets of Santiago de Compostela demanding “truth, justice and reparation”. They commemorate the biggest railway tragedy in the history of Galicia, in which 80 people lost their lives and 145 were injured. Chanting slogans such as “They are not forgotten, they are very present, independent investigation”, “Pastor, Blanco or responsible for when?”, they began their march, which began at the train station, toured the streets of the center and ended in the square Or Obradoiro.
Relatives and victims of the derailment carried suitcases to the main façade of the Cathedral. They symbolize “the people who couldn’t get here”. “A company like Fomento, the only obligation it has, which is a state company, is to take all the passengers to the place of destination safely, but the train never arrived. With the suitcases we symbolize all the victims who never arrived”, explains Arturo Domínguez, spokesperson for the platform. The words represent that “we also want justice against the lies that have been. They wanted to hide the truth from us.”“We would like it to be a tribute to the victims and their families, but the accident is still pending investigation”, Add. In the same week that the process will be seen for sentencing, they demand an “exemplary” resolution. Since the sentence will foreseeably be known at the end of the year, they admit to trusting the judge. They do not think the same of the State Attorney’s Office and the prosecutor, who, they say, “have shown that they are going against the truth.”
