At the Gadumija concert in the opera, everything is like a beautiful ball: champagne, splendid costumes and passions worthy of an opera house. The staging is a tribute to the set designer Andris Freiberg, who passed away this year, using the sets he created for the opera “Masku Balle”.
Opera singer Laura Gretzka emphasizes: “Even we artists really feel a festive atmosphere with such beautiful music, with such beautiful costumes and stage. It is also a real pleasure for us to celebrate our New Year like this.”
“We want something bright in this cold winter and in this difficult time and, I think, the south of France, Italy, Spain are the ones who know how to celebrate the holidays,” LNOB chief director Mārtiņš Ozoliņš said.
Opera anniversary concerts are a long-standing tradition. Among the ranks of the public there is no shortage of those for whom visiting the opera in December is an indispensable part of the holiday, as well as those who are in our “White House” for the first time.
“When I booked the tickets, I didn’t really know what this concert was going to be like, but it turned out to be amazing, I really enjoyed it,” commented Raluka from Norway, a visitor to the concert. “I didn’t expect there to be so many performances and compositions of such a high standard.”
This is one of the few nights of the year when the opera orchestra is on the stage, noticed and truly appreciated, when the conductor on the stage more than once becomes a full member of the show.
Mārtiņš Ozoliņš admits, “We like to be noticed, of course we like to be on stage, we like to play. But you have to understand what is our plan for December. If you look at our website, we played at least 25 shows to prepare something more, honestly in other words, 2-3 attempts for us to prepare this vacation here”.
Gadumija’s concerts at the opera house will continue until December 30th. Gadumija’s concert will be broadcast live on Latvian Radio 3 “Klasika” on December 28th.
