Anniversary: Salzburg Football Association celebrates its 100th anniversary

On April 15, 1921, the independent football association for the federal state of Salzburg, the SFV, was constituted. In the years before that, there was a joint “Football Association for Upper Austria and Salzburg”. Today, Thursday, April 15, 2021, the SFV celebrates its 100th anniversary. It has 130 clubs and over 25,000 members.

SALZBURG. After the First World War, the joint “Football Association for Upper Austria and Salzburg” was founded. The first championship was held in the founding year 1919, but took place without Salzburg participation. In the following season 1920/21 the first and then only Salzburg team took part – namely the 1st Salzburg Sports Club in 1919. The SSK took 3rd place with 7 points from 8 games.

Foundation of the Salzburg Football Association

At this point in time, Salzburg had already achieved extensive autonomy in the joint football association for Upper Austria and Salzburg. In the spring of 1921, five local football clubs decided to found their own association in Salzburg. On April 15th, it will be 100 years since representatives of the clubs SAK 1914, FC Nordstern, Itzlinger Sportclub, 1. Oberndorfer SK 1920 and Amateur Sportclub in the Salzburger Gasthof Sternbräu elected Paul Massiczek as the first president of the Salzburg Football Association. In the minutes it said, among other things:

“The most important task will be to promote sport in the province of Salzburg, to bring sport discipline to a level that is exemplary in England, for example.”

Initially, there was massive protest from Upper Austria against the “split”. The Salzburg clubs were threatened with bans. The then Austrian Football Association (ÖFV; predecessor of today’s ÖFB) recognized the independence of the Salzburg Football Association.

A big gala was planned – make up for a small group celebration

130 clubs are currently registered with the SFV and the association has over 25,000 members. The lawyer and sports official Herbert Hübel has been president of the SFV for 20 years. Celebrations for the 100th anniversary are not planned due to the corona situation. A big gala was planned, which had been prepared for over a year and a half, but it had to be canceled last December. If the situation allows, the people in charge of the SFV would like to hold a small group celebration in autumn.

It doesn’t look good for the current season

The last championship games of the Salzburg clubs took place at the end of October, so it was almost six months ago. It doesn’t look good at the moment that they’ll whistle another game in the Salzburg leagues this spring.

“Day after day, the hopes dwindle. In order to bring about a rating, it would be enough that only the first half of the season is played. But we are still missing a few games in all leagues”,

explains Peter Haas, managing director of the SFV. At the end of April / beginning of May, a final decision will be made as to whether the 2020/21 season will be canceled. We’ll see how things will look in the coming season.

Successes of the SFV

Three clubs from the state capital in the second highest division in Austria – as happened in the 1987/88 season with SV Austria Salzburg, FC Salzburg and the SAK 1914. This could never be achieved before or after. A few years later, in the 1993/94 season, the SFV was able to celebrate the first Austrian championship title with what was then Salzburg Austria. Currently only FC Red Bull Salzburg plays in Austria’s highest league, the Bundesliga, and is currently the most successful club in Salzburg and of course Austria with seven championship titles in a row. Only FC Liefering currently plays in the second highest division, the other Salzburg clubs play from the regional league downwards. For women, FC Bergheim has played in the Planet Pure Women’s Bundesliga for several years.

The women's team at FC Bergheim has been playing in the top division, the Planet Pure Women's Bundesliga, for several years.

“The big anniversary can
hopefully to be made up for in autumn “

“Unfortunately, due to the corona pandemic, there is a standstill on the soccer fields of the Salzburg Football Association. This forced break is particularly hard for the children and adolescents, my son is himself a goalkeeper at the USK Gneiss. It remains to be hoped that this milestone anniversary – 100 years of the Salzburg Football Association – can be made up for in autumn. The clubs I have a connection with, USK Gneis and USK Hof, were both founded in 1956, 35 years after the Salzburg Football Association “

, the Second President of the State Parliament, Sebastian Huber, congratulates the SFV on its 100th anniversary.
