The date commemorates the day in 1492 when the first recorded contact took place between inhabitants of the American continent and Europeans, who arrived on the first of the three expeditions commanded by the Genoese sailor Christopher Columbus. This meeting, which would give rise to the Spanish conquest of American territory – named in turn by another Italian sailor, Americo Vespucci— it occurred on the island that its inhabitants, belonging to the ethnic group secretthey called Guanahani. Although it is worth clarifying that its exact location could not be determined, it is known that it is one of the islands that make up the archipelago of the Bahamas. On that occasion, the Europeans renamed it San Salvador and they continued their journey through other islands of that geography, among which was Cuba. Its discovery confirmed the theory of Colónbased on previous observations, that the Tierra was spherical, but the sailor had mistaken the second part of his premise, according to which he had found a direct sea route to the Indiasprimary source of spices and other goods at the time, and not to a continent completely unknown until then to Europa.
