Anna’s mother has been on ic for six months after corona: ‘goes very slowly’

After contracting the coronavirus, Anna’s 47-year-old mother suffered from a rare nerve disease, usually the result of an infectious disease. The so-called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects about 200 people a year in the Netherlands, damaged her nerves and makes her hardly able to move her muscles. “She is paralyzed from head to toe”, says Anna at Jinek.

“Things are getting better now, but very slowly”, she continues. The corona virus currently no longer has her mother. “Thank goodness she’s off the ventilator, but otherwise it’s very little. She can move her neck muscles, shake no and nod yes.”

Communication is still difficult, says Anna. They often come out with the help of flashing and a letter card.

Shortly after the catering industry closed on March 16, Anna’s mother became ill. This led to a predicament in which she had to contend with serious respiratory problems. When things really stopped working, the emergency services were notified and an ambulance picked her up at home.

An extremely low oxygen level in her blood – 62 percent, where it normally should be between 95 and 100 – was equally feared for her life. Anna said goodbye to her mother and could not see her for 3.5 weeks. After a while the woman from Oss was able to get off the respirator, but since then recovery has been difficult.

“Sometimes I ask her: are you proud of yourself? Then she shakes no very quickly”, says Anna. “It is not going fast enough for her. She has been awake for months and is one hundred percent awake. Only her body is not doing what she wants.”
