Anna’s mother has been on IC for a very long time by Corona: ‘This can happen to anyone’

Anna’s mother is a restaurant owner from Oss in Brabant. “A very powerful woman, nothing is impossible for her,” Anna described her to Beau. She says she is very shocked by what happened to her mother and urges people not to underestimate the virus.

Alarmingly low oxygen content

Shortly after the closing of the catering on March 16, Anna’s mother fell ill. This led to a perilous situation in which she suffered from serious breathing problems. When things really stopped working, the emergency services were notified and an ambulance picked up her home.

That call never came too early. Her blood oxygen levels were alarmingly low. 62 percent. In a normal physical condition, the oxygen level in the blood is between 95 and 100 percent.

“Her life was seriously feared,” said Anna. “We said goodbye to her and couldn’t see her for 3.5 weeks. We received a call from the hospital once a day with information about her condition.”

Meanwhile, there is something of hope for Anna’s mother. Slowly, very slowly, things are going in the right direction. She cannot speak because of the oxygen she receives, but she can communicate. She does this by moving her eyes or sticking out her tongue.

Fortunately, there is no longer a corona infection, but that does not mean that Anna’s mother has already recovered. “She has paralysis due to a nervous system attack. And it remains to be seen whether there is permanent injury in the brain. How she will come out of the hospital is not yet known. There is still nothing to say about it.”

Still 293 corona patients on IC

In the Netherlands, 293 corona patients are still in intensive care. On February 27, the coronavirus was first diagnosed in the Netherlands. In the first days of March, the number of patients in intensive care started to rise. At its peak, on April 7, intensive care units treated 1,424 corona patients.

Nobody can predict how far the number of corona patients in the intensive care units can still decrease. The National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution expects that the reopening of primary schools will have little consequences for the number of infections. The number of infections could increase if the government relaxed more measures in early June.
