Annalisa Gabriele new director of the Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine Department of Rimini

Annalisa Gabriele has been appointed director of the “Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine” Operating Unit of Rimini. It happens to Simonetta Nucci who has reached retirement age. The professional was presented this morning (Tuesday 15 September) at a press conference in the presence of the medical director Mattia Altini, the medical director of the Catia Drudi hospital, as well as the professional.

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 2001, at the same University the professional achieved the Specialization in Hematology in 2005 while at the University of Florence, in 2013, she obtained the second level Master in “Hemostasis and thrombosis” . From 2005 to 2010 Dr. Gabriele worked at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bologna dealing in particular with immunohematology, blood components production, stem cell management, patient management in the pre- and intraoperative period, haemostasis and donation of skeletal muscle tissue. Subsequently and until his appointment as head physician of Rimini, he worked at the Maggiore Hospital in Bologna, dealing with the management of the “blood resource” and the transfusion process; she was in charge of the training sector, referent for transfusion appropriateness and since 2015 referent of the Clinic of Transfusion Medicine of the hospital in Bologna. In collaboration with the Emergency Department, he contributed to drafting the “Mass transfusion protocol for polytrauma patients”.

Dozens of publications in specialized magazines as well as participations as a speaker at important symposiums, at Italian and international level.

Rimini’s “Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine” service “serves” the five hospitals in the provincial territory, nursing homes and various other private structures, as well as contributing to the regional blood bank.

Regarding the blood collection activity, in 2019, the service collected 14,412 bags of whole blood and over 2,500 of blood components; there are 8,725 regular donors and over the 12 months there were 1,347 donors on the first donation and 1,999 aspiring donors. In the same period 12,722 units of blood were transfused to 4,332 patients, 1,525 units of platelets to 397 patients, 354 units of plasma to 120 patients.

Regarding the activity of transfusion medicine, 206 plasma exchange procedures were carried out for 36 patients and erythropheresis procedures for 3 patients; 262 bloodletting, 91 infusions of coagulation factors, 48 ​​collections of autologous stem cells, 283 consultations were also performed. The Immunohematology laboratory performed about 12 thousand blood group and Rh factor determinations; over twenty thousand investigations carried out between searches for irregular antibodies and second level diagnostics.

Among the projects that will be implemented by the end of the year, home management for anemic patients: “They represent a significant percentage of the population and are currently managed at the hospital level through access to the emergency room: a modality that must be overcome, for the good of both patients and the service, and we are trying to do so, always in collaboration with the emergency room itself. as well as with volunteering, through home management”Said Dr. Gabriele; who added: “I found myself very well working in Rimini and immediately, and I intend to innovate a lot the service that, in Rimini, has what it takes to become a reference for the vast area on the most clinical part. Unfortunately, many projects have slowed down due to the covid, but now we are restarting”.

The strong innovative drive brought by Dr. Gabriele, who has been in service since January, was also highlighted by Dr. Drudi and Dr. Altini. “Home management of anemic patients – said the latter – it is an example of that ‘hospital without walls’ that we want to build. We must provide quality services to all our services, at the Romagna level, in an equitable and appropriate manner across all territories. We have a network of services available, ranging from family doctors, to health homes, to the role of volunteering … and which must be exploited to the maximum“. Another fundamental aspect, “the digitalization of healthcare, to provide services as close as possible to the citizen, and which will also help us in this process of opening up healthcare ”. And in particular on Dr. Gabriele, “she is a professional who stands out for preparation and leadership, we are pushing a lot in professional enhancement, because it is through professionals that the theoretical health models then have to materialize”.
