Annabel Nanninga is a candidate for the JA21 list for the parliamentary elections, she confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening. She is currently the party leader in the Senate on behalf of the party.
“Yes, I applied, which was known internally before the fall of the cabinet that I would do it,” says Nanninga. “And no, I don’t want to become a party leader. The rest is up to the selection committee.”
Several Hague sources say that not all members are happy with Nanninga’s ambitions. For example, some think it is not fair if she leaves her job as party leader in the Senate early for this. It is also complained that she is too harsh on migration.
However, one source notes that there are few alternatives. It has been restless within JA21 for some time. Several prominent figures from the party, including Nicki Pouw-Verweij and Derk Jan Eppink, sent a critical letter to the board earlier this year.
Pouw-Verweij and Eppink believe that the power of the party lies with only a few people. And they disagree. After a disagreement, Pouw-Verweij and Eppink have reported that they do not want to stand for re-election.
