Anna Timireva (Kniper): The Untold Story of the Mysterious Old Lady in “The Diamond Arm”

It’s worth taking a closer look at the ordinary old lady.

Leonid Gaidai was an excellent director. He not only made great films, but also endowed them with many meanings, obvious and not so obvious.

For example, in the “Diamond Arm”, which has been studied far and wide, a trace of the famous Admiral Kolchak was recently found. Of course, mediated – there could be no other option in Soviet cinema.

At the very beginning of the film, a foreign tourist flashes briefly in the frame. The handsome, gray-haired old woman with a camera, in a spectacular hat and dark glasses does not seem very important to the audience, they hardly pay attention to her.

It really doesn’t matter to the plot. It’s not the role that’s interesting, but the performer. The traveler was played by Anna Timireva (Kniper), the beloved of the leader of the White movement.

In the 20s and 30s she was repeatedly expelled from Moscow, even sent to camps. In the 50s, the woman was rehabilitated, but did not appear on screen. Although she was no stranger to art: for example, she advised Sergei Bondarchuk, who worked on War and Peace.

And only in the late 60s, the already elderly “Madame Kolchak” starred in a cameo role with Leonid Gaidai. Some fans of the film believe that in such an intricate way the director once again said “hello” to the censors, whom he did not particularly like.
