Anna Strasberg, the widow of Lee Strasberg, the founder of the legendary Actor’s Studio, on whose ‘method’ stars such as Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Robert de Niro, has died at the age of 84. After her husband’s death in 1982 Anna continued to train entire generations of actors. The widow Strasberg ended up inheriting the bulk of Marilyn’s estate, of which the diva had left 75 percent to Lee and his first wife Paula, who died in 1966. Lee married Anna a year later.
The death of Anna, a Venezuelan from Caracas, was announced by the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute which Strasberg had helped to found: “Her dedication to the ‘Method’ and to the Institute has left an indelible mark on cinema and theater “. In 1999, Strasberg had entrusted Christie’s with the sale of Marilyn memorabilia: among these, the famous ‘nude’ mermaid dress that the diva wore at Madison Square Garden to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy, had passed hand for a million dollars.
