PARIS – Slovak tennis player Anna Karolína Schmiedlová already made it to the 3rd round of singles at the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament.

In the second round, for the first time in her career, she defeated the Spanish “lucky loser” Aliona Bolsova 6:3, 6:4. On the Paris clay, she equaled her best from 2020 and 2014.

In the duel for advancement to the round of 16, she will face the American Kayla Day on Saturday, who knocked out the twenty-seeded compatriot Madison Keys 6:2, 4:6, 6:4. Schmiedlová “avenged” her compatriot Kristína Kučová, who played only three games against Bolsova in the first round.

Schmiedlova had a great start to the match, when she twice broke her opponent’s serve and built a 4-0 lead. In the next few minutes, the Spaniard increased her aggressiveness, limited the number of unforced errors and reduced the score to 3:4, but the end belonged to the best Slovak singles player.

Schmeidlová did not use the 3:1 lead in the second act, but at 3:3 she took Bolsova’s serve again and brought the match to a successful end. In the tenth game, she converted the third match point in a row and adjusted the mutual balance with the Spaniard to 1:2. Bolsova avenged this year’s loss from the WTA hard tournament in Merida, Mexico, and the one from last year on clay in Bogotá, Colombia.
