Anna and Lucas want to remain unrecognizable and their names have also been changed. “I wanted hormone-free contraception anyway, so the pill was not an option.” Anna chose the Ballerine because it was specially made for young women who have not yet had a baby.
Pregnancy
But after the placement she will not have her period. She takes a pregnancy test and it turns out to be positive. “We really fell off our seats. This is simply not possible, ”said the couple. The ultrasound shows that the spiral has prolapsed. “It was in my cervix and they could easily pull the spiral out.” When she tells her story on forums, she turns out to be not the only one.
Anna and Lucas decide to terminate the pregnancy. At the abortion clinic, Anna hears that she is no exception. “The doctor who helped me indicated that she noticed that I was not the first and that it is not common for someone with a spiral to end up there.”

Not an incident
Anna’s story does not turn out to be an incident. Midwives see that the spiral subsides and that despite the Ballerine, women sometimes get pregnant. “What we experience with the Ballerine we have not experienced with other spirals. After more than a year of placement, we are less enthusiastic and we have more and more questions about this ”, says midwife Sanne Albers.
Information about this remains difficult, because no figures are available yet. “But there are so many stories that you can’t ignore it,” said midwife Alyke Deunk. In some parts of the Netherlands, midwives, in consultation with gynecologists, have even decided not to install the Ballerine for the time being. According to the manufacturer of the Ballerine, there is no cause for concern and the coil is completely safe.
