Anja von Allmen is one of the greatest hopes of Swiss sailing. With Alinghi Red Bull Racing, she hopes to qualify for one of the small categories of the America’s Cup. But his dreams don’t stop there.

Going dancing until dawn, shopping with friends or spending her holidays at the beach… What is normal for other young adults is absolutely not for 20-year-old Anja von Allmen. His five to six weight training sessions per week and up to 180 days of sailing per year, training and regattas abroad leave him little free time. “Sailing is my passion and I want to give 100%.” His studies in business economics are therefore not his priority.

From individual sport to team sport

Anja von Allmen started sailing at age nine. When a one-day sailing course as part of the holiday passport was postponed due to bad weather and it turned into a week of sailing, she was definitely won over. “What fascinates me about sailing is that I only have my boat and I have to make the best of any situation.” In recent years, the Spiez resident has had some notable successes. At 15, for example, she was the first Swiss woman to win bronze at the world championships in the optimist category. She then went on to win junior titles at the World Championships in Canada and Europe in Portugal, in the Laser 4.7 category. She also won two world championship silver medals in the ILCA 6 Olympic Junior category.

His next goal? With Alinghi Red Bull Racing, participate in the America’s Cup in the fall of 2024, in the Youth and Women categories.

On Lake Thun, Anja von Allmen tried to qualify for the America’s Cup.

“I gave it my all during the first selections on Lake Thun,” she says full of hope. However, she had to leave her comfort zone: “I normally sail alone and am used to making all the decisions on my own.” However, the America’s Cup is played by teams. The last selection will take place at the end of autumn in Barcelona. “The challenge is huge,” she admits, smiling. “I will have to improve my way of communicating. It’s not easy to leave the controls to someone else.”

Hybrid car pioneer

At Lexus, we believe in individuality. That you have to go your own way, as Anja von Allmen does. The Swiss sailor has chosen Lexus and its advanced hybrid technology and drives a Lexus UX Hybrid. Anja von Allmen dreams of Olympic gold

Despite many great successes, Anja has also experienced setbacks. “The international elite has a very high level. Every mistake is expensive.” Going beyond it and drawing positive lessons from it is hard work. “It’s important not to lose sight of your goal, overcome challenges and never give up,” says the sportswoman. “I don’t have to be perfect. Just better than my competitors.”

His biggest dream? Olympic gold. “In the world of sailing, the Olympics are very important,” she continues. She is a member of the B executives of the Swiss Sailing Team and trains with Maud Jayet (27); this, although a single Swiss woman cannot represent our country at the Paris Olympics in 2024. She is therefore above all aiming for the 2028 Games. ‘gold.” For 2024, it is primarily focused on the America’s Cup.

For Anja von Allmen, sailing is synonymous with discipline and a school of life.

The hike to clear your head

Anja von Allmen grew up on Lake Thun and spends a lot of time on the oceans around the world. “The more I travel, the more I appreciate the quality of life in Switzerland.” So, as soon as her schedule gives her time, she leaves for the mountains at the wheel of her Lexus. “I love the beauty of nature. When hiking, I clear my head and replenish my energy.»

The 20-year-old also attaches great importance to the protection of the environment: “I have a front row seat to see how dirty the oceans are. I therefore regularly participate in beach cleaning actions and collect waste at the water’s edge. She doesn’t understand why some people leave their trash lying around. “We need to take care of our planet!”
