DJ Anja Grebe new chairwoman of the VöKK – Association of Austrian Art Historians elects Grebe as chairwoman at the general meeting

Krems (pts031/02/17/2022/15:00) – At the Annual General Meeting on January 28, 2022, university professor Anja Grebe, University for Continuing Education Krems, was unanimously elected as the new chairwoman of the Association of Austrian Art Historians. In this role she succeeds Dr. Elisabeth Priedel and Mag. Daniela Hahn, who have held the chair since 2019.

With her election, Univ.-Prof. dr Anja Grebe, Professor of Cultural History and Museum Collection Sciences at the University for Continuing Education Krems, before the ten-strong VöKK board. This is made up of representatives of the five curiae of the association – monument protection, maintenance and research, freelancers, self-employed and other fields of activity, museums, exhibitions and collections, students as well as universities and research institutions – and can be expanded by extraordinary board members. The board of directors is elected for a period of two years at the annual general meeting, with a maximum of two re-elections being permitted. The tasks of the new board include the organization of the 22nd association conference, which will take place in 2023 to mark the 30th anniversary of the association.

Art history in theory and practice

Anja Grebe studied art and media studies, history and French literature at the University of Konstanz, where she received her doctorate in 2000 on “The Edges of Art. Book Design in the Burgundian Netherlands”. In 2012 she habilitated in art history at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a thesis on the international reception of Dürer in the early modern period. Her other academic positions include the universities of Bamberg, Würzburg, Freiburg/Breisgau and a visiting professorship at Peking University in Beijing. Since 2015 she has been a university professor for cultural history and museum collections at the University for Continuing Education Krems, where she is co-supervisor of the master’s course in museums “Collection Studies and Management”. Grebe has been Deputy Head of the Department of Art and Cultural Studies since 2018 and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education, Art and Architecture since November 2020.

Parallel to her university work, Anja Grebe worked as a curator, cultural mediator and publicist. She teaches and researches across epochs on the theory and history of museums and collections, on the art market and cultural transfer, and on art of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

“A particular concern of mine is the stronger networking between universities, museums and the preservation of monuments, also in the sense of expanding the promotion of young talent and transnational exchange. Together we can use the current challenges, for example through the digital transformation and changes in the labor market, as opportunities and actively help shape the future of art history,” says Anja Grebe.

About the VöKK

The Association of Austrian Art Historians sees itself as an association and representative of the interests of its currently around 320 members from various art historical professions as well as students of art history, art and visual sciences. Its primary goals include, among other things, reflecting on the subject and the role of art historical research and teaching in the 21st century in international comparison, informing the public about the importance of research and professional practice by Austrian art historians for the cultural sector, and advocating the necessary financial and cultural-political framework as well as support for corresponding measures by other cultural interest groups.

The association was founded in 1983 as the “Austrian Art History Association”, and 20 years later it was renamed to its current name. In addition to the conference proceedings and special issues, the association publishes the “VÖKK Journal”, which appears three times a year as an association journal in print and digital form.
