Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The highly contagious avian influenza is spreading and has now also reached Freiburg. The virus responsible for the disease was detected in the sample of a swan that died at Dietenbachsee, the city of Freiburg announced on Monday. This means that the outbreak of the disease has been officially declared and that all poultry kept in the city area are obligated to stay in stables. The order is initially limited to four weeks.
Bird flu has been spreading across the southwest for weeks. Municipalities in the districts of Böblingen, Reutlingen, Tübingen and Karlsruhe are now also affected. Since last Sunday, there has also been a stable requirement for poultry in Stuttgart. The Ministry of Agriculture had previously refrained from making stables nationwide. Bird flu, which mainly affects waterfowl, is harmless to humans.
