Animal Welfare Violation Case at Freiburg District Court: Defendant on Trial for Horse’s Inhumane Killing

Freiburg District Court, Holzmarkt 2, Freiburg, meeting room V, 1st floor, 23 Cs 524 Js 5497/23

A 58-year-old German citizen is being tried before the criminal judge for violating the Animal Welfare Act. The defendant is said to be in charge of a stable in a community in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. When a farrier noticed a horse suffering from slight lameness and a swollen pastern joint in the hind leg in December, he and the local farrier decided to kill the horse without first consulting a veterinarian. The case against Hufschmid was already heard on October 16, 2023 at the Freiburg District Court (26 Cs 524 Js 1060/23). This was – not legally binding – sentenced to a fine of EUR 300.
