Animal shelter Stichting Flappus in Zwolle calls on people to donate food for guinea pigs. The shelter, together with other agencies, rescued 417 guinea pigs from a terraced house, and does not have the means to buy food for all the animals.

Some of the sows are pregnant. That is why the foundation expects to have even more guinea pigs in a while: “We are holding our breath here. A little calculation shows that we will probably have around a thousand guinea pigs in a week or two,” says owner Carl Withaar. RTV East.

There is a particular need for meadow hay, herbs and vegetables such as peppers, chicory and endive. Due to the crowds at the shelter, employees cannot collect the food themselves, according to the foundation.

Respiratory infections

Some of the guinea pigs have a fungal disease or respiratory infection, according to a vet’s examination. They are quarantined and being treated. Once the animals have been declared healthy, they will be put up for adoption. The sows will first give birth and raise their young before being offered.

The owner of the house where the animals were found enlisted the help of the foundation. She bred the animals “because she liked it”, the foundation says. According to the regional broadcaster, her help has been offered.
