SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, 3 (PRESS EUROPE)
The animal welfare association Fundación Franz Weber has warned that the use of animals in the Three Kings parade in Ourense “identifies the city with ill-treatment”, and has therefore asked the local government to reconsider its decision.
In a statement, the collective informed this Saturday that there are numerous motions and initiatives in institutions that advocate not using animals in parades or exhibitions, which has led “many” municipalities to declare themselves places without animal shows.
In the case of Ourense, they have put its mayor in a bad light, Gonzalo Pérez Jócome, who apologizes that there is no legislation in this regard, as he argued during the debate on a motion in the municipal plenary asking the city council not to use real animals in this year’s parade which was held with the support of PSOE and BNG.
For animal rights activists, Jcome “didn’t consider, not even remotely, the enormous scientific evidence around this issue”, while they dwelt on the fact that its use in the procession “generates a negative impact on the city”.
In this sense, we recall that the petition created by FFW on the ‘Change.org’ platform to ask the Municipality of Ourense not to use animals in the procession has already collected 77,000 signatures.
“Ourense’s refusal to replace live animals with more carts and amusements could end up creating the opposite effect, with thousands of people identifying the city with animal abuse, as happens with other municipalities across the Spanish geography,” he said. ensured the organization.
MOCIN IN OURENSE
In last Friday’s municipal plenary, the Socialist Party managed to bring forward a motion to ask for the removal of animals present in the festive-playful shows, such as reindeer and dromedaries in the Three Kings parade, thanks to the support of the BNG, the only party that she voted yes, alluding to “animal rights” and the “stress” caused by these celebrations.
For their part, Democracia Ourensana, Partido Popular and Ciudadanos have criticized the fact that the Festa do Boi continues to take place in Allariz and bullfights in Pontevedra. The PP gave up its abstention stating that it was in favor of “regulation”, but “not abolition” questioning whether “it would also concern falconry or equestrian shows”.
“It’s not about whether it’s animal abuse or not, it’s about knowing if it’s legal or not and in this case it’s legal. If you want it not to be, do it, because that’s what those who govern Spain do. state is for,” he said. Jas settled.
