Earlier this month, TV 2 wrote about how to treat dogs in the summer heat.
On Saturday afternoon, the South-East police district informed on Twitter that they had retrieved a dog that had been left in a hot car in Bogstadveien in Oslo.
– We have taken out a dog that was barking in despair in a hot car. Attempts to call the car owner did not succeed. The patrol pushed down a window that was slightly open and let the dog out. Responsible car owner came to the place. The case is being reviewed, it was stated in the Twitter message.
Races on Twitter
The incident has caused the comment field on Twitter to boil over, and several point out that you should not get a dog if you are unable to take care of it.
The operations manager in the South-East police district, Guro Sandnes, believes the incident appeared dramatic for the patrol that was on the scene.
– From the time we received the message at our exchange and until the owner of the car arrives, the dog is in the car for over 20 minutes without supervision. We tried both to call and to seek residence at the owner of the car without success.
She informs that it has created great reactions within the police as well.
– We who are here also think it is terrible, and therefore chose to post a general call on Twitter that people should not leave their animals in this heat, she says to TV 2.
We remind you that no animals should be left in a car in this heat. Unforeseen things can happen that can delay a conscientious owner / caretaker, and it becomes life-threatening hot for the animal in a short time, on days like this. Thanks to those who called us! The dog is fine now.

– Several dogs die
Hot days often lead to excursions, and many dog owners then choose to take the dog with them. The Animal Welfare’s general manager, Åshild Roaldset, believes that people should reconsider this.
– You must take good care of dogs and other animals in the heat, and make an assessment of whether it is best for the animal to be with or if it is best that it stays at home.
She reacts strongly to the dog that was left in the car on Saturday afternoon in Bogstadveien in Oslo.
– It is cruel that this happens, and it is a violation of the Animal Welfare Act if the animal is harmed by it.
The police state that fortunately it went well with the dog that was taken out, but according to Roaldset, the dog could become part of a gloomy statistic.
– Several dogs die of heat stroke every year. Heat stroke is often fatal to animals if they reach a certain temperature. High temperature causes permanent organ damage, which even intensive treatment can not fix.
Some more vulnerable than others
Roaldset further explains that there are some breeds that are more prone to heat stroke than others, and encourages people to learn the characteristics of heat stroke.

– Take special care of animals with short snouts with a lot of fur and those without fur, she says.
On such hot days as it has been in the past, one must take special care of his animals. Roaldset has a clear appeal to dog owners:
– Learn the characteristics of heat stroke. For example, there may be retracted corners of the mouth, red gums, wheezing and the tongue being rolled up and backwards. Many people think that the dog then smiles, but it is about to get a heat stroke, she says to TV 2.
