Neighbor Felicity Carter found the beloved bird on Monday lying against a fence with an arrow sticking out of its plumage, writes news agency AP.
She wrapped Pete in a blanket and took him to a vet who specializes in exotic animals.
The vet tried to treat him, and even investigated the possibility of a blood transfusion from another peacock – but the bird’s life could not be saved. At the vet it also became clear that Pete had been hit twice – not just once.
– I just don’t understand why anyone would do something like that, says Carter and adds:
– Everyone just wants to find out who did this. We want justice for Pete.
Animal protection in the city is now investigating the death of the peacock. In Las Vegas, animal cruelty can be punished with up to six months in prison and a fine of 1,000 dollars, which means more than 10,000 kroner.

The peacock belonged to a resident of a small neighborhood in Las Vegas, but has been regarded as the pet of the entire neighborhood.
Several of the neighbors now say they are completely devastated. They loved feeding Pete berries, and found security in the fact that the peacock was always just around the corner – whether he was relaxing in someone’s garden or running after the garbage truck, writes the news agency.
– Pete will always be remembered for his distinct personality, says Carter.
The peacock was often seen mirroring itself in its own shining image and rustling its feathers.
