Animal Freedom: Animal husbandry should be completely stopped in Latvia

In Latvia, as in the Netherlands, animal husbandry should be completely stopped in the near future, Katrīna Krīgere, the chairwoman of the board of the association “Animal Freedom”, admitted to LETA.

She mentioned that “Animal Freedom” has long indicated the need to ban the breeding of animals for fur production in Latvia. Among other things, signatures are currently being collected for submitting a petition to the Saeima in order to prohibit by law the breeding of animals in zoos for obtaining fur and decorative clothing items.

In Animal Freedom, the Dutch parliament on June 23 advocated a speedy end to zooing across the country, without waiting for the end of the transition period in 2024, and provided compensation to owners of existing 128 farms to limit the risks of further spread of Covid-19 virus. The decision is made because farmed mink can become a reservoir for the spread of coronavirusCovid-19 infection has been detected in 17 of 128 mink farms in the Netherlands.

Animal Freedom reported that the Dutch parliament had also decided to ban the transport of mink by excluding the introduction of new mink into farms where animals were slaughtered due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Animal Freedom pointed out that a new coronavirus infection had also been detected in two mink farms in northern Denmark in June. The Danish Food and Veterinary Office has started testing 120 farms across the country to find out how widespread this problem is in local farms.

It has already been reported that a ban on fur farming was adopted in the Netherlands in 2013, with a transitional period of ten years.

Association “Animal Freedom” was founded in 2012.
