For many Ukrainians, pets are more than just animals. They become members of our family, giving loyalty and boundless love. However, their lives can be threatened by viral diseases, poisoning, road accidents and even tick bites. In many cases, in order to save your furry family members, you need to provide them with timely medical assistance. And sometimes the last hope for salvation is a blood transfusion.
Previously, in most cities of Ukraine, such procedures were little known or unavailable, so often animal owners looked for donors on their own. Usually this happened through acquaintances and requests in communities and, unfortunately, this process is very time-consuming.
However, recently Ukrainian veterinarians and volunteers decided to change the situation and unite in a global platform for animal blood transfusions. About it reported All-Ukrainian humanistic movement UAnimals.
“Telegraph” tells how and where animal donation works in Ukraine and how ethical is it to neglect the interests of animals in the context of blood transfusion?
How the donation algorithm works
People cannot be animal donors. Cats can only be donors for cats, and dogs for dogs (in rare critical cases, dog blood can be transfused into a cat). Special requirements are:
full vaccination; absence of chronic diseases; weight from 25 kg and age from two to seven years – for dogs; weight from 4.5 kg and age from two to six years – for cats.
Donation is a simple procedure and involves simple steps. First you need to fill out a form, tell us about yourself and your animal; indicate whether you are looking for a donor or are ready to become one? As soon as there is a need for blood or a donor is found for your animal, you will receive a notification. If your animal is ready to lend a paw, you need to confirm this and get the contact of a friend who needs you. After this, all that remains is to visit the clinic and carry out all the procedures.
Is donating blood to an animal a humane initiative or exploitation?
Previously, there were only a few local blood banks in Ukraine. Now we have a global initiative, so even the smallest localities can join. TO platforms joined 164 donors from 47 cities Ukraine. And from September 1, they began accepting applications from seeking donors. The procedure itself is free of charge. However, some local blood banks offer financial rewards for donating blood.

Telegraph turned to the zoo lawyer with a question about the ethics of this practice. As the vice president explained AZOU Marina Surkova, Animal rights play an important role.
— According to the law, animals are a thing. That is, they are not subjects, but only objects of law. They can be sold, donated, bought, etc. Therefore, no one ever asks an animal whether it wants to be the property of one or another owner or not. The question is truly ethical, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t work for animals yet,” says the zoo lawyer.
According to the specialist, there are no laws or regulations regulating animal donation in Ukraine. There is only a law to protect animals from cruelty. And there are basic provisions that protect animals, but there is no talk about donation.
“Therefore, I look at this situation from a personal point of view, as an animal rights activist. For example, I believe that such a procedure should be free. After all, people will begin to use animals for profit, exploitation and making money. If such a procedure is free of charge, then it will be carried out exclusively in case of saving animals, emphasizes Marina Surkova.

At the same time, in Kyiv, for example, there is a private veterinary clinic Zoolux, which has its own blood bank. Here, owners of animals participating in the donation procedure receive financial rewards.
Telegraph contacted representatives of the clinic to find out whether they control such payments.
“People actually get money and can do whatever they want with it.” They can keep them, add them to their pet’s card on our network, or donate them to charity. Do people abuse animals, I will say: before each blood donation, animals are examined and have a blood test done to understand whether the donor has recovered from the previous procedure. If we don’t like the test results, we tell the owner to wait. Or if you have any questions about the general condition of the animal.
We must be sure that the blood donor is clinically healthy in all respects. People cannot bring a bad-looking cat who is ill for donation, says the head of the blood bank of PC Zoolux. Maria Yakymchuk.
Ultimately, the essence of this policy is that the donation procedure is very necessary. And the financial incentive contributes to a more efficient search for donors. However, much depends on the moral values professed by both clinic owners and animal owners.
