Düsseldorf. Anil Yildirim can currently be seen on the TV show “The Voice of Germany” and is wowing the jury. He actually didn’t want to take part.
Anil Yildirim actually vowed never to take part in “The Voice of Germany” again. He took part in the casting show as a 16-year-old, but failed in the pre-selection. “I should come back in a few years,” they said to me back then. I had potential,” remembers Anil. Today he smiles at the appearance of his younger self. “I didn’t do myself any favors with ‘Feeling Good’ by Michael Bublé either. I didn’t even know where I wanted to go musically and I just sang everything.”

Now, nine years later, the Düsseldorf native knows exactly what music suits him – and he has done it again: He is a candidate in the current season of “The Voice of Germany”, and was in the first round, in the so-called “Blind Auditions” and convinced the jury with a quiet, German ballad. “I’m so glad I took part again,” says the Düsseldorfer with a laugh. “I’m living my dream right now.”

It was a friend who encouraged him to apply. At the beginning of the year, Anil sent a video to the makers of the casting show and received confirmation shortly afterwards. He’s there. He gets to sing on the big stage in front of the prominent jury. “I couldn’t believe it at first.” This brought him a little closer to his dream of becoming a professional musician.

Since when has Anil been singing? “Always,” he blurts out. “Music plays a big role in our culture to express feelings,” says the young man with Kurdish roots. Whether Kurdish, Turkish or German songs – music is always playing in the living room at home in Lierenfeld. “My mother sings too. That just influenced me,” says Anil.
Through a mutual friend, the young man met a professional musician in 2018 and a day later found himself in his recording studio in Düsseldorf. Anil starts writing his own songs, posts samples on Instagram and hopes that a producer will notice him. But the music business is tough.

The singer finally takes matters into his own hands and has been producing his own music videos since 2022 and publishing his songs on the internet. “I want to make music my full-time job, it’s more than a hobby for me,” says Anil, who works as an in-house sales representative on a day-to-day basis. His eyes light up when he talks about his music, his great passion.
The 25-year-old has now released 13 songs on Spotify and YouTube. Mostly German indie pop ballads, with Kurdish influences, but also R’n’B and soul sounds. “Touching people with my lines is the greatest gift for me.”

While Anil already produces songs professionally, he lacks one thing: stage experience. “I’ve only sung in front of my family or at weddings,” he says. The appearance on “The Voice” is of course a house number. “Funnily enough, I wasn’t nervous at all the whole day,” says the musician about the TV shoot. Until you put the microphone in his hand. “That was an awesome feeling.”

Anil Yildirim can hardly remember his performance. “It all went past me so quickly.” He was even more excited when he saw himself on television in the opening episode on September 26th.
After his success in the “Blind Auditions”, the “Battle” continues. Anil has to compete against another candidate from Team Kamrad to get to the next round. The “battle” has already been filmed, but the Düsseldorf participant is not allowed to say anything about the outcome yet. So it remains exciting.
But one thing is certain for Anil Yildirim: Even if he doesn’t become “The Voice of Germany”, he will continue with music. “I don’t want to have to say in ten years: ‘If I had tried it back then’”.
