Anik St-Pierre Overcomes Adversity to Impress Judges on La Voix with River Deep, Mountain High

“It’s crazy the amount of love I received. I’m like levitating!” confides Anik St-Pierre when contacted by Le Nouvelliste. Sa prestation de River Deep, Mountain High – who also opened the popular TV show – quickly captured the interest of the judges. It was France D’Amour who turned around first, after only a few notes, followed by Roxane Bruneau, Corneille and Mario Pelchat.

The Mauritian’s vocal and physical agility played in her favor. The 51-year-old woman delivered a solid performance of the Tina Turner classic, pushing the audacity to the point of concluding her song… with a split. “In Quebec, let’s say that I buttered the thick toast!”, underlines the singer, laughing. A signature that seemed to please the judges. However, it was with the artist Roxane Bruneau that the woman wanted to experience her adventure.

The choice of this piece was not a coincidence. It was this song that signaled his departure from The Voice, but it is this song that now ensures his new start with Quebec production. “I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this song. I told myself when interpreting it that it would be a nice snub… but here: let’s say that I was able to make peace,” continues the new candidate.

When the sixth audition is the right one

It should be noted that this was yet another attempt to join the popular show for Shawiniganaise.

“I had to go through the audition process what, five or six times? Yes, it took me courage to try again, but I think it can bring me something different, that maybe a producer somewhere will want to work with me,” believes the artist who, despite her age, still believes that she can leave her mark in the Quebec industry.

“I’ve always sung. Over time, I fell into teaching young people, but also people with limitations and I loved it. But I forgot myself in all that. I like composing and writing,” says the singer, who hopes that her adventure will make her meet “the right people.”

“I told myself that at 51, it was time to think about myself!”

Already, she and her coach Roxane Bruneau have established a great connection. “It was my first choice if a chair turned over. At first glance, we may seem very different, but in fact, we are very similar. We have the same energy, in particular! With her, I know that I can expect anything,” observes the artist on his adventure which is just beginning. It was a pleasant surprise for her to have managed to seduce all of the show’s judges.

Anik St-Pierre says she was touched by the reaction of the audience in the studio during her audition. “We didn’t hear it on the broadcast, but I received a standing ovation after my performance. It’s flattering, because it’s not an audience that knows me, it’s not in my region. It does a lot of good!”
