Anies Proposed Tightening Since May, Center Rejected

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan said to have proposed the Implementation of Restrictions on Community Activities (PPKM) Java Bali strictly since the end of last May.

This was revealed by epidemiologist Pandu Riono through his twitter account @drpriono1.

Anies, he said, had proposed the Java-Bali PPKM after hearing input from the pandemic team of the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Public Health that the Covid-19 surge had begun.

“At the end of May, after listening to the @fkmui Pandemic Team’s input regarding the potential spike that could occur, @aniesbaswedan immediately proposed to the central government to immediately tighten the Java-Bali maximum,” said Pandu, quoted from his tweet, Monday (5/7).

However, the proposal was not accepted by the central government. They refused to apply tightening on the grounds that the economy should take precedence.

“Not accepted, because of economic issues. There is KPC-PEN, but only PEN is thought of,” he said.

KPC PEN is the National Economic Recovery Covid-19 Handling Committee chaired by Airlangga Hartarto. Various policies related to the handling of the pandemic have been under the authority of KPC PEN.

Meanwhile, there has been no information from Anies or the DKI Provincial Government regarding Pandu’s statement. Recently, Anies said that DKI is currently in a danger sign as the number of deaths due to COVID-19 continues to increase.

The government is known to have established the Java-Bali Emergency PPKM which will take effect from July 3 to July 20. A number of new rules are in place, starting from working from home or 100 percent Work From Home to closing malls.

The implementation of the Emergency PPKM is the impact of the surge in Covid-19 cases which continues to increase and even continues to record new records, both related to residents who are exposed to cases of death due to Covid-19.
