Anies Baswedan Calls for State to Stay Out of Nomination Process

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The presidential candidate (Bacapres) from the Coalition for Change for Unity, Anies Baswedan requested that the state not interfere in the process of nominating someone. According to Anies, after 25 years of reform, people still feel pressured to implement democracy.

“Today, some of us feel that freedom is being suppressed. In the past, the state regulated who it was, who could run for legislative candidates, who could run for the presidential election, who could run for mayor of the regent, everything was regulated. Today there should be no regulation on who can run and who can’t run,” said Anies at the Tennis Indoor Senayan, Central Jakarta, Sunday, May 21, 2023.

Anies made this statement when meeting volunteers at the National Volunteers Gathering. The event was attended by thousands of Anies volunteers from various regions.

Anies’ remarks seemed to satirize President Joko Widodo or Jokowi who previously often provided support for a number of candidates to run for the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres). Jokowi often gave signals to the Vice Presidential Candidate from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Ganjar Pranowo, and the Presidential Vice President from the Gerindra Party, Prabowo Subianto.

While Anies himself is often referred to as a candidate that is not sanctioned by Jokowi. The smell of his being prevented from running for the presidential election erupted after the head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Firli Bahuri reportedly forced the investigation into the alleged Formula E corruption case to go to the investigation stage.

Furthermore, Anies said that the task of managing someone is advanced or not deep 2024 presidential election is the authority of political parties and the aspirations of the people. Anies said the state must guarantee the independence of someone who wants to stand in the election, not stop it.

“It’s not that the state has stopped it, it’s not the state that has banned it. The state guarantees independence and that’s what we have to fight for now,” said the former Governor of DKI Jakarta.

Furthermore, Anies asked that the issue of a three-term presidential term be avoided

Anies Baswedan also asked his volunteers not to let issues regarding the position discourse 3 term president. According to Anies, during the reforms that took place 25 years ago, the people agreed that the presidential term would only be for two terms.

“So when someone has an idea to extend it, then we say, we are committed to reform aspirations,” said Anies to applause and cheers from his volunteers.

Furthermore, Anies gave an illustration of a frog which, if put in a pot of cold water, then turned on a fire which slowly made it boil, then the frog would die from boiling. However, if it is immediately thrown into boiling water, then the frog will immediately. jump.

According to Anies, if the current condition is allowed to continue, then the condition will be the same as a frog that died in boiling water cooked from cold water.

“When we talk about 25 years of reform, which should we stick to? It seems slow, so if anyone has an idea to change, we have to stop it,” said Anies. “So if there are high-ranking officials in this country who are slowly shifting, don’t ever let it happen because this is the same as raising the temperature of the water.”

Want to restore the spirit of the 1945 Constitution

In his speech, Anies Baswedan also stated that he wanted to build a government whose spirit was in accordance with the 1945 Constitution. By referring to the basis of the state, Anies said that the people would get real independence.

What’s more, according to Anies, the current condition of democracy after the reforms 25 years ago is still not very good.

“Today, some of us feel that freedom is being suppressed. In the past, anyone could run for the presidential election, candidates, regents, mayors. Today there should not be a regulation on who can run and not, don’t set it up,” said Anies.

The former Governor of DKI Jakarta said that the state guarantees the independence of its people. He stated that he would fight for it and demand equality and opportunity for anyone.
