Anguish over missing people in a river accident in Ucayali: Relatives demand an effective search

UCAYALI. On March 30, two boats transporting personnel from the Special Project for the Control and Reduction of Coca Cultivation in Alto Huallaga (Corah) and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) collided in the Tamaya River, leaving people injured and missing.

Three days after the tragic accident, the search for the missing is progressing slowly, generating despair in the relatives. Ángela Delgado, daughter of one of the disappeared who works for the Corah Project, calls for a more effective search and support from the authorities.

On the morning of March 30, the Chávez II and Rocky II boats were transporting members of the Corah Project and the PNP, who were carrying out eradication work on illegal coca leaf plantations. Following the collision, several crew members managed to swim to shore, but suffered injuries in the process. Currently, the injured, including two PNP officers and two members of the Corah Project, are receiving treatment in clinics in Pucallpa.

However, the disappearance of two members of the Ministry of the Interior’s special program and one from the PNP was also reported. Federico Delgado Vela, a worker at the Corah Project, is one of them. Angela Delgado, his daughter, recounted the slow search with anguish.

Complaint for search without results

Three days after the tragic event, Angela Delgado pointed out that there is still no news about her father’s body. On March 31, she arrived at the accident site at 1:30 pm, after Corah project authorities assured that divers from the city of Iquitos would arrive to begin the search. However, the wait was in vain, as the divers never showed up.

Despite false hopes, she and other relatives of the missing were taken to the city of Pucallpa at 4:30 pm. The next day, April 1, they returned to the scene of the accident at 11:30 am, only to find the same devastating scene: the accident boat remained upside down and there was no progress in the search. She only found the crane and the divers had not yet arrived. She pointed out that in the afternoon the divers would finally arrive.

Angela found out about the accident through social media and immediately traveled to Pucallpa. «My father worked for more than 30 years for the Corah project and gave his life. We are three families desperate to care for our relatives properly. “I ask the Ministry of the Interior to move papers and start doing something, they do nothing,” she cried.

Response from the Ministry of the Interior

The Ministry of the Interior issued a statement on the same day of the events. However, Inforegión stressed that this statement did not mention the loss of crucial equipment in the fight against drug trafficking, including 16 assault rifles.

The statement detailed that on Saturday the 30th, the Corah Project operations staff coordinated with the PNP Police Aviation Directorate for the deployment of two UH1 helicopters and one MI17 helicopter. These vehicles transported medical personnel, search and rescue teams, as well as firefighters, in order to treat the injured and begin the search for the missing.

He also pointed out that the Dirandro Search and Rescue team continues its search for the missing. However, relatives express their dissatisfaction, urging the authorities to intensify efforts and provide greater support so that they can properly say goodbye to their loved ones.

In an unexpected event, on the morning of April 1, while search and rescue operations continued, the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Torres Falcón, presented his resignation from office.
