Angry Vettel convinced that Leclerc has a better car: ‘I’m not a complete idiot’

Sebastian Vettel is experiencing a tough season Ferrari. The four-time world champion is struggling with his SF1000 and people are no longer surprised if he is already among the dropouts during qualifying in Q1 or Q2. Driving his car to the points during the race is no longer a matter of course, but in Portugal he succeeded again when he crossed the line in tenth place.

Leclerc was told over the radio after the Portuguese Grand Prix that his teammate had finished tenth. He responded with joy and called the performance ‘good’. To Vettel, though probably well-intentioned, this felt like a verbal slap in the face as it became painfully clear that the student had become the teacher and the four-time world champion a big joke that one is proud of when things get a little better . However, Vettel does not like to be treated like this and is almost certain that Leclerc’s car is better than the material he has to work with.

“I’m not here to score a single point,” Vettel told opposite RTL. “I had a lot of problems in the first round. I kept losing all of my grip again and again. It’s hard to build trust and the consistency just lacks. Obviously, the other car is much faster. It is always the same place where I lose a lot of time, I can see that in the data. An idiot would never be able to drive where Leclerc rides, and whether I’m a complete idiot, I doubt that.
