Angry Indian Women Take Action: Homes Burned Down in Response to Manipur Incident

Angry Indian women burned down the homes of two men accused along with two others of forcing two girls to parade naked through a crowd in May in northeastern India, where months of ethnic violence left at least 120 dead.

The video angered many opposition and human rights circles in the country

The suspects were identified through a video of the incident, which took place in early May, which went viral on social networks on Wednesday and sparked national outrage.

The video clip shows two women walking naked down a street being harassed by a mob in Manipur as the authorities cut off their internet connection.

“Four main suspects have been arrested in the case of the video that went viral,” Manipur state police said Thursday evening on Twitter.

Also Thursday, a group of female activists belonging to the Mitte group, like the accused men, threw piles of straw at the house of one of the accused in Imphal and set it on fire.

On Friday, another group of women burned down the home of a second suspect, photos showed.

“Can normal people do this? Even cats and animals don’t do this kind of dirty work,” said a protester near Imphal, where hundreds of women gathered to demonstrate.

The state government headed by the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People’s Party) announced that the police took action immediately after the video spread on social networks, more than two months after the incident.

State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said on Twitter that a “thorough investigation” was underway.

“We will ensure that strict action is taken against all perpetrators, including by considering the possibility of carrying out the death penalty,” he added.

Violence erupted in Manipur in May after the Mete groups, mostly Hindus living in and around the city, protested against the granting of quotas in government jobs and in universities for Christians of the Kuki group living in the surrounding hills.

In a report submitted to the court in June, the Manipur Tribal Forum group noted that many acts of violence, including rape and beheadings, had taken place without the authorities opening investigations.

On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The Manipur incident is a disgrace to any civilized society.”

India’s Supreme Court warned Modi’s government that it would “act” if the cabinet did not move a finger.
