Angry at Taliban Winning, Afghan Girls Take Up Arms

ACCEPTANCE – Afghan girls have taken up arms in areas that government forces are fighting over with the Taliban. The girls were angry at the Taliban, who won victories in some areas with the withdrawal of the United States (US) military.

The United States is continuing its troop withdrawal, in line with President Biden’s promised deadline of September 11. The deadline was pushed back to August 31. Afghan forces are now barely battling the Taliban on their own.

Government troops have been withdrawn from seven districts, concentrating troops and resources around the provincial capital Badakhshan.

In response, hundreds of girls and women took to the streets carrying guns and protesting against the Taliban.

“There are some women who just want to inspire the security forces, only symbolically, but many more are ready to take to the battlefield,” said Halima Parastish, head of the women’s directorate at Ghor. “That includes myself.”
