Angry at Putin about Ukraine, France confiscates Russian cargo ship

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaFrance has reportedly seized a cargo ship belonging to a Russian company. This seizure was carried out when the ship was about to sail from France to Russia on Saturday, (26/2/2022).

In an Al Jazeera report, Captain Veronique Magnin of the French Maritime Prefecture said the cargo ship was named the Baltic Leader. At the time of the seizure, the ship was sailing from Rouen, in Normandy, to the Russian city of Saint Petersburg.

“The ship was stopped in the English Channel and diverted to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France in the early hours of Saturday morning,” he said. “Checks are being carried out and the crew is acting cooperatively.”

For this confiscation, the Russian Embassy in France is seeking an explanation from the country’s authorities on the decision to confiscate.

France itself is one of the countries that imposed sanctions on Russia due to Moscow’s maneuvers that launched its aggression against Ukraine. Together with his colleagues in the European Union (EU) bloc, Paris has also imposed sanctions to isolate Russia from the world banking market.

“The EU wants to sever all ties between Russia and the global financial system,” French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said at the start of a meeting of European finance ministers. “We want to isolate Russia financially… We want to drain financing.”

Russia decided to carry out a military operation in Ukraine last Thursday. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that this was done because of Ukraine’s maneuvers to approach Western countries that were threatening his country.

In addition, Putin also called this attack to stop the Ukrainian government which was considered to have carried out genocide against ethnic Russians who were in the east of the country. Currently, some of the Eastern regions such as the Donbass and Crimea have fallen under Russian control.
