Angola asked the UN to end the blockade against Cuba – 2024-09-25 20:42:12

New York/Prensa Latina

Angolan President João Lourenço today called for an end to the economic blockade against Cuba and sanctions against Zimbabwe, policies he described as unjust and inhumane.

Speaking at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, the Angolan leader reiterated the need to put an end to these measures that “increase the suffering of these peoples and greatly hinder the economic and social development of these countries,” he stressed.

Lourenço began his speech by referring to the worrying international context, where multiple conflicts in various parts of the world put peace and security at risk, as well as hindering the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He referred to the urgent need to reform the UN as an institution and, in particular, the Security Council, whose current format and composition reflect a world that no longer exists.

He stressed the need to give a voice to the countries of the global south: Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and South Asia, and stressed that “multilateralism must prevail as the only framework truly capable of safeguarding the common interests of all humanity.”
