Anglet Rugby Starts Strong with Victory against Rennes: A Thrilling Match with Character and Solidarity

Anglet started its season in the best possible way: with a victory (29-27) against a big chicken. This Sunday, the Basques received a team from Rennes who were still playing in National last May. For this first, the locals did not do everything well, far from it, but they showed character and solidarity against a denser Breton formation, especially in front.

The Realistic AORC

Facing their audience, the blue and white made an interesting start. Players and inspired, they scored a try quickly, thanks to Leconte, who came to finish a movement at the end of the line (5-0, 6th). Under the sun of the Saint-Jean stadium, the players of the Biscay-Fauqué duo then defended a lot, rather well by the way, against a very clumsy Rennes team, even if they scored a try with a superb combination after a touch ( 5-10, 24th).

In difficulty in the air at the start and sometimes bothered in the closed scrum, the AORC, led by a Laulhé in great shape, nevertheless knew how to be very realistic at the end of the first period. Leconte first scored a double on the ball carried (12-10, 35th) then André flattened a game at the foot well felt by Bérot, small side (17-10, 38th).

Returning from the locker room, the Basques struggled, especially when the REC brought in their bench. In five minutes, the partners of Chabat, cornered in their 22 meters, conceded two achievements marked in force (20-20, 58th; 20-27, 63rd). Rennes had then just inflicted a scathing 17-3 on the locals. But the latter did not give up and went back to attack the opposing camp.

Curutchet and Pulon were important at the end

Came into play after a quarter of an hour in the second half, Curutchet passed a first penalty which gave hope to his people (23-27, 66th). A moment later, following a nasty tackle without the arms of Dubois on Chabat, sanctioned with a red card, Anglet had a new penalty in the Breton camp. There were then five minutes left to play and the Angloys were down four points. Two options presented themselves to them: slip into touch or hit the penalty. Curutchet took second. He did not shake and brought his team back to one unit (26-27, 76th).

In a breathless end to the match, if Curutchet’s foot allowed his team to believe in this comeback, the length of that of Pulon was also precious, especially in the battle of the occupation. On a final possession near the halfway line, the AORC got a penalty in their favour. The former dacquois then did not hesitate and indicated the posts, to restore the advantage to his people (29-27, 80th).

Serious for 80 minutes, his partners were also applied on the last action, to defend their line well and recover the ball, which Pulon did not fail to send far from the limits of the field, before letting his joy explode.

Reaction

Sébastien Fauqué, rear coach: “We are starting off in the best possible way. We rose crescendo during friendly matches. We knew that the Rennes team was serious and that it was going to be complicated. The boys showed the state of mind that we wanted to put in place, they didn’t give up until the end. It was not closed, there was play, heat, everyone sent off. With the kilos they give us back, we pay for it over time. We were fresher in the first half, the second was more complicated, but the guys went after it. »
