“Anglet Beaches Now Chargeable for Visitors: Mayor Responds to Opposition as Parking Meters Installed and Alternative Transport Offered”

PI am sure that the elected officials of England will line up their towels this summer on the same beach: but Anglet has more than 4 km of stretch of sand so that everyone, in the majority or the opposition, can lie down calmly to enjoy the joys of the bath, without crossing paths. Because the introduction of a parking fee did not go through like a letter in the mail, Thursday evening, since an opposition group abstained (Vivement Anglet) and the other (Réveillez Anglet) voted against.

In this debate, which looked like two drops of water to that on the Bayonne Festivals which had become chargeable, between a majority, on the right, in favor of charging for access to a public domain in order to participate in the overall financing (maintenance, development and security), here the beaches, at the expense of the city alone and an opposition, on the left, unfavorable to this “taxation”, “which once again harms the most modest households”, Mayor Claude Olive quickly responded to the question: “The beaches of Anglet will be chargeable for everyone, except for Angloys. »

600 spaces for bicycles

The annual cost of the beaches is estimated at 2.5 million euros, payable by Angloy households. Free parking between La Barre and La Chambre d’amour was a special feature on the very busy Basque coast (1). It was sometimes necessary to turn for hours to find a free place as close as possible to the ocean. The establishment of parking meters should therefore “ventilate” the Angloy maritime space, if we are to believe the mayor. “Nothing is less certain, there will always be so many cars in summer on the shores of the beaches, thinks Sandrine Derville (Vivement Anglet). Visitors will pay and congestion will be the same as last summer! These car parks, whether paid or not, will always be vacuum cleaners for cars. It would have been necessary to propose credible alternatives to the whole car. »

In response, Claude Olive, who presented this long deliberation in person, highlighted that the City, in conjunction with the Mobility Union, will encourage users to use the Txik Txak public transport network, whose offer to the beaches will be strengthened. “The initiative is accompanied by the improvement of access conditions for two-wheelers, in particular bicycles, whose parking offer has been increased to 600 locations on the Angloy coast”, still indicates the city councilor.

Measures that did not convince Sandra Pereira-Ostanel, the elected representative of Awaken Anglet, finds the device “unimaginative and discriminatory. The comparative cost of free parking/price of transport is not good. We are witnessing a withdrawal of the municipalities of the BAB, it is worrying. When will the entrance fee to the Chiberta forest be payable? »

(1) The attendance study by the Departmental Tourism Agency 64 lists 8.175 million visitors in 2022 in Anglet. A figure up 31% compared to 2021. That is 860,000 tourists (+23%) and 7.315 million day-trippers (+33%), one-time visitors not from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques spending at least two hours on the town without staying there.
