Angle of Repose Exhibition: A Reflection on Domestic Intimacy at Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery in New York

December 21, 2023

In New York, the Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery is hosting the “Angle of Repose” exhibition until January 27, 2024. A reflection on the notion of domestic intimacy, between contemporary works of art and historical pieces.

TriBeCa neighborhood, New York. It is here, on the fourth floor of a former textile factory, that Jacqueline Sullivan recently opened her gallery dedicated to decorative arts and design. Until January 27, 2024, the gallery owner presents a collection of works and objects that question the notions of “home” and domestic intimacy.

To imagine the exhibition “ Angle of Repose“, Jacqueline Sullivan drew inspiration from the eponymous novel by Wallace Stegner, published in 1971. The writer tells the story of four generations of an American family, since 1860 and the time of the Conquest of the West. He then develops a reflection on the quest for a “home”, on the boundaries between interior and exterior.

To bring this intimate reflection to life, Jacqueline Sullivan has brought together the works of four contemporary artists, presented alongside vintage furniture and historical pieces that are dear to her. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Isa Toledo’s immaculate canopy sits alongside an imposing Pennsylvania rope bed. But there are also woven sculptures by Elliot Camarra and borosilicate glass creations by Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi. Without forgetting the elegant “Jardin” silver cutlery collection by Conie Vallese and Orit Elhanati. A beautiful dialogue between styles and eras.
