Angers breaks negative streak by beating Saint-Etienne 4-2 in Ligue 1

Paris. Angers won 4-2 against Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Ibrahima Niane put hosts Anger ahead again from the penalty spot in the 69th minute and Bamba Dieng completed their first win in nine league games in added time.

“We have been waiting for this victory for a long time,” said Jean-Eudes Aholou, who also scored for Angers. “We suffered a lot to achieve it.”

Angers rose to 14th overall, tied on points with Saint-Etienne but with a better goal difference.

Zuriko Davitashvili scored twice, his fifth goal in October for Saint-Etienne after a hat trick.

Himad Abdelli opened the scoring for Angers in the seventh minute, then Davitashvili sent goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur the wrong way from the penalty spot, and Aholou scored his first goal in more than a year.

Davitashvili tied the tie at 2-2 from the edge of the box in the second half with a curling shot that went wide.

The winger joined from Bordeaux this summer as Saint-Etienne prepared to return to the top flight after a two-year absence. He was a member of the Georgia team that reached the round of 16 of the European Championship this summer and defeated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Brest scored two goals in the first 18 minutes and held on for a 2-1 victory.

Romain Faivre beat the goalkeeper from the penalty spot and Mama Balde doubled the visitors’ lead. Joseph Okumu closed the gap in the first half.

Undefeated in the Champions League, Brest has not had as much success domestically, already losing four games. Saturday’s result put them in eighth place, one point behind Reims.

Later, Lille travel to Lens in the North Derby.

Leader Paris Saint-Germain travels to Marseille on Sunday for the latest installment of Le Classique, the biggest match in French football.
