After reaching the milestone of 800,000 inhabitants in 2014, Maine-et-Loire confirms the growth of its population with 820,713 residents listed by INSEE on January 1, 2020. The department gained 16,020 inhabitants between 2014 and 2020, contributing likewise for 11% to the increase in the population of the Pays de la Loire. With an annual increase of 0.3%, Maine-et-Loire is below the regional increase of 0.6%, driven by the dynamism of the Loire-Atlantique (+1.2%). However, this rate is comparable to the national population growth, placing Anjou 34th among metropolitan departments.

The territory of Angers Loire Métropole is notable for an increase in its population of 0.7% in the periods 2009-2014 and 2014-2020, receiving an average of 2,200 new Angevins each year, for a population of 303,535 inhabitants. The metropolis thus contributes 83% to the demographic dynamics of Maine-et-Loire. The city of Angers alone thus welcomes more than 800 additional residents per year between 2014 and 2020, the second largest annual gain in the Pays de la Loire, behind Nantes (+3,700 inhabitants per year).
