Anger and water bottle: Cologne’s Baumgart “a bit excited”

Steffen Baumgart was very angry – but quickly reconciled after the final whistle. In the Cologne coach it is constantly bubbling. His team’s draw in Fürth finally makes him mild.

Fürth – Steffen Baumgart vented his anger on a water bottle. The coach of 1. FC Köln was satisfied with the draw at SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

“Why was I upset? Because I was upset. That happens to me. But why? The bottle was in the way, it was after the game and then it was intercepted well,” Baumgart described his mini freak out shortly after the final whistle in the Bundesliga. “I’m a little nervous after the game. There were one or two situations that I didn’t like. That’s part of football and that’s good too.”

Baumgart’s anger quickly dissipated. After 90 fast-paced minutes at 1-1 (0-0) in Franconia, he hugged his fellow coach Stefan Leitl on the pitch. The Cologne coach just has to let off steam. Sometimes a drinking bottle then attracts his anger, which was fired against the dugout.

Europe within reach

“I would like to congratulate both teams on the point. Both teams played a very, very good, intense game,” said Baumgart after the 36th point in this excellent Cologne Bundesliga season. “It’s more than fine.”

A point at the bottom of the table sounds like a disappointment at first. But Baumgart is concerned with the correct classification. “We have to look: Where are we coming from? What have we achieved? What else do we want to achieve? We have to work hard for every game.”

So where does FC come from? Last season, Cologne were 14th in the table after the 24th matchday with only 22 points. Now it’s already 14 points more. Even Europe is within reach.

But this requires an increase. “We have to stop the phases where we become a bit too passive,” said captain Jonas Hector after his 300th competitive game in Cologne. After all, Florian Kainz put the guests ahead in the 52nd minute with a seemingly harmless cross. In front of 9200 spectators, Sebastian Griesbeck (69th) equalized with a header. “Of course the shot wasn’t intentional,” admitted Kainz and was annoyed: “We had a number of chances and could have scored more goals.”

Fürth wants to hide the table

This also applied to the Fürth team, but they didn’t act as compellingly as the guests. After all, the Fürth team remained undefeated in front of their home crowd for the sixth time in a row. “I thought it was a really good game from both teams,” said Leitl. “Overall it’s a fair draw.”

After the 14th point of the season, the Fürth want to continue to hide the table situation. “Why should we look at the table? For us it means: continuously scoring points,” said Leitl.

Ideally, three times next Saturday (3.30 p.m.) at second promoted VfL Bochum. “It’s definitely not enough, but we played a good game,” said striker Jamie Leweling. “Next week in Bochum we have to get three points.”
