Anger and misunderstanding about moving 95-year-old within Eastern length

‘Our father was only told last month that he must move to Scheemda on December 17. You’re not making that up, are you? ‘, Sister Janneke wonders in frustration.

Zorginstituut Oosterleng and Woonzorg Nederland, the owner of the building, admit that the communication started later than is normally the case.

Removals

95-year-old Chris Oolders lives in residential care center De Renselheerdt in Winschoten. Two groups of residents live there. One group needs long-term care, the other group rents an apartment from Woonzorg Nederland and uses the 24-hour care provided by Oosterlength. The latter also applies to Chris.

The group of people with long-term care has known for some time what the future will bring. They move to another location, De Emmaheerdt in Winschoten.

For the other group, consisting of almost thirty people, it was until recently the question what was going to happen. This lack of clarity was partly due to the bankruptcy of a project developer, which delayed the new construction. But clarity came in October; then the residents were presented with several options.

Options

Residents can choose to move to Scheemda. There they then receive their 24-hour care from East Length. Or the residents can choose to continue to live in De Renselheerdt, but that choice has consequences. Because Oosterlength stops at the De Renselheerdt location, the concern disappears.

He doesn’t really talk about it, but he is definitely up for it

Greetje – Daughter of 95-year-old Chris Oolders

But Janneke, her sister and her father do not have the feeling that there is anything to choose. “Our father has to move with us to Scheemda, because he is too old to take care of himself completely.”

‘Chris is in it’

Chris is helped with the food, he is washed and dressed. He has lived in Winschoten almost all his life, but that period has come to an end.

The father does not like to talk about the situation. Greetje: ‘He’s fine, but he’s a real fat man. He doesn’t really talk about it, but he is definitely up for it. You also notice this with other residents. Imagine that you are 95 years old and are suddenly told that you are moving to Scheemda within two months. That is poorly communicated. ‘

‘Very annoying’

Both Woonzorg Nederland and Oosterlength have responded to the situation. Woonzorg Nederland: ‘We did not communicate well in advance. We find that very annoying. We can imagine that the move of Oosterlength from De Renselheerdt causes unrest among the residents. ‘

The communication took longer than we would have liked

Ismay Kremers – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oosterlength

Ismay Kremers, manager of Oosterlength: ‘We personally informed the residents of the details of the move in October. That does not alter the fact that it is very annoying that people have experienced a lack of clarity. The communication has certainly taken longer than we would have liked. That’s because there were still talks about the future of the Renselheerdt. ‘

Future Renselheerdt

The sisters are fed up with the situation, but understand that renovation needs to be done. Janneke: ‘They are very small bathrooms and it is all dated. We understand that people can no longer live there. ‘
The intention is that the elderly will leave for their new destination in Scheemda in December. Meanwhile, the future of De Renselheerdt is still being considered. Director Kremers says that there is talk about the realization of 25 care places at the current location. But that agreement has not yet been reached.

The planning is that the renovation will be completed by the end of 2022. The question is whether current residents will be able to return, because it is not yet known what kind of homes will be built in the building. Greetje: ‘We secretly hope that our father can return to De Renselheerdt after two years. That is a great wish. ‘
