Angelina Jolie to step down as UNHCR ambassador

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has announced her resignation as Ambassador of UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, where she has held since 2001.

Jolie wrote on Instagram that she would be spending “the rest of my life” working with refugees.

“After more than 20 years, today I resign from my job at the United Nations refugee agency,” Jolie announced.

Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am committed to working with them for the rest of my life. UNHCR, in a joint statement with Jolie, praised her “tireless” work in more than 60 field missions in various countries, including Yemen and Burkina Faso, and called her “one of the most influential advocates of rights of refugees”.

“I will continue to do everything in my power to support refugees and other displaced people for years to come,” Jolie said. “After 20 years of working in the United Nations system, I feel the time has come for me to work differently by directly engaging with refugee and local organizations and advocating for their solutions.”
