Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has announced her resignation as Ambassador of UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, where she has held since 2001.

Jolie said refugees are “the people I admire most in the world” and that she will now focus on working with organizations “led by those most directly impacted”. [bruņoti] conflict”.
47-year-old Jolie is known as an actress and social activist. She has been working with UNHCR since 2001 as a goodwill ambassador, but in 2012 she was appointed special envoy.
Jolie wrote on Instagram that she would be spending “the rest of my life” working with refugees.
“After more than 20 years, today I resign from my job at the United Nations refugee agency,” Jolie announced.
“I believe in many things the UN does, above all [cilvēku] the lives it saves with emergency aid. UNHCR is full of extraordinary people who make a difference in people’s lives every day. Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I am committed to working with them for the rest of my life. Now I will work in organizations led by the people most directly concerned [bruņoti] conflicts and which gives them the loudest voice”.
UNHCR, in a joint statement with Jolie, praised her “tireless” work in more than 60 field missions in various countries, including Yemen and Burkina Faso, and called her “one of the most influential advocates of rights of refugees”.
Jolie said in a statement that she was “grateful for the privilege and opportunity” to work with members of the organization.
“I will continue to do everything in my power to support refugees and other displaced people for years to come,” Jolie said. “After 20 years of working in the United Nations system, I feel the time has come for me to work differently by directly engaging with refugee and local organizations and advocating for their solutions.”
